What's the situation with Mac OS X and WMV files? I have plenty of those as well. If it's not capable of doing everything I want then obviously I won't get it, but if it is, are the negative comments based purely around its price? Of course, much of my desire for the Air is based on irrational geek lust, so all your negative comments are certainly giving me secound thoughts. The only thing it doesn't need to do is play games, since I have a dedicated Windows machine for that. Like I say, I'd like as many things in one as possible, then the price can be justified. I can do it under Linux but I much prefer Mac OS X itself as an environment for working in. I can do Perl development under Windows, but I sure as hell don't like it. Most of all I want a linux-like command line environment (terminal), but with a nice front-end for GUI applications. I'd like easy calander management/syncing between an iPhone and the machines at home & work. I'd also like to try out things like Aperture and the iLife software. What software, exactly, do you want to run which requires Mac OS X? In short, I've met a lot of pretty Macs, but never a quiet one. Of course, the decibel levels put out by these machines is nothing compared to more aesthetically pleasing roar of a Power Mac G5's under load. I also had a Mac Mini that sounded made my office sound like an airport (the kind with airplanes) when the fan kicked in. I have given up on running Windows in Parallels on my MacBook and I avoid flash heavy websites because it makes the world's most annoying loud/high pitched whine whenever the CPU load goes over 25%. I seriously doubt the MacBook Air makes more noise. (While true, I seldom actually even hear it, this laptop is virtually silent.)

The only significant my noise my MacBook Pro makes under typical use is the high pitched whine from the left speaker grill. Is the macbook Air ACTUALLY silent though? It has a fan like any other notebook and with the relatively high wattage CPU they have in it (for the size), I'd think it runs more often than not. Interface is probably a bit spotty, but you should be spending the least amount of your time there, so it might not be too bad. Hell, if you're not recording, there are tons of DVD players that will play xvid or divx or whatever, even off of USB drives. It's got pretty much everything you need.

Or, if you don't actually need to record TV and just need playback, get an Apple TV and just hack it a bit. Still a Mac, can still run windows, has a DVI out you could run to HDMI as needed, just get a USB soundcard for your digital audio needs. You could build a mini-itx based system with compact flash system drives and networked mass storage for far less than the cost of an airbook. That is a completely preposterous waste of money, unless it's to be the absolute only computer you have. I'm asking because I'm seriously tempted by the MacBook Air as a replacement for a silent Windows machine.
